Is it possible to set the printer settings like default printer paper type, size and print type, i.e. fast normal? The printer is an HP Deskjet 5100. I have tried to set it manualy and talkto HP, but both are to no avail.

Thank you,

Try explaining what your problem is. Are the settings changing, or are you not able to set them?

I set the printer to Fast normal and plain paper but it keeps defaulting to glossy paper and draft outputno matter what I do or where I make the settings.

One of the programs that use the printer may be set to those settings and that is why this is happening. If you have tried to reset in all appropriate locations at the same time without sucess, I suggest that you try removing the printer, reboot and reinstall. Maybe there is some type of bug in the driver software that shows up with only certain conditions. If HP has been no help to you they either have not seen this issue before, or they don't have a solution. If this is a older printer I believe HP won't want to devote resources to solving your problem. Recently there was a poster here that had a hardware/driver issue that they finally resolved by using Windows drivers instead of the manufacturer's drivers.
