After a new windows installation I needed to install my printer again. I had forgot that the cd-included with the printer did not support win2000. When the hardware wizard detect a new hardware I refered to the installation cd- and clicked next,, something happend,, but there was not a complete installation. Somehow it came to my mind that the driver enclose did not support win 2000, so I downloaded the correct(?) driver (840-enu-2kinfu. Exe) from HP-s support base.
I followed the procedure,, going by start-setup and printers,, but the system was not able to detect any printer (correctly attached)... and by trying to install manually,, by Lpt1 Windows har not my printer deskjet 840c included in the HP list
I the tried to close the system.. disconnect
everything,, connecting and starting again.. but no new harware was detected and... by trying to find the printer as mentions above windows.. windows was unable to detect the printer...
Can you please tell me how I can get around this problem.. I suspected that the first installation attempt has left some traces on my pc, so that the hardware wizard does not find the printer. I do hope you can answer me today.. Thank you..

You are right in thinking that the first install has left "traces" of information.
What you will need to do is pop you install cd back into your pC and run the un install feature. Be warned though, you may need to do this 2 or 3 times before you can get your PC to recognise new hardware.
I have come across this problem so many times, and is especially annoying when installing using USB where you NEED to find the new hardware for the install to work at all ! ! !
Good Luck. . .
:o)

I have tried to do what you suggested,,but there was no uninstallation function on the
hp- installation cd. And when I click on
the installation-icon the system reports that windows 2000 is not supported..
Do you or someone else have any other suggestions..?? thank you.. bjarte s.

Hi,
I have looked at the HP web site. There is adriver download for your printer for Win2K. This link is to an english version - ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/printers/software/840-enu-win2k.exe
Don't know if that will help.
A question to ask is did the PC recognise the printer before as new hardware - you may have a faulty printer?Let me know. . . .
:o)
