I have a PC with Windows 2000 Professional Service pack 3. I downloaded the free version of Advance Registry Optimizer and clicked the optimize registry button which rebooted my computer. Now when I boot I get the preparing network connections window which was never there before. Besides taking a few minutes to wait for this window I can no longer get on-line as the computer tries to register with a non-existant network. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the ARO software as well as my ISP software all to no avail.
Can anyone tell me how I can disable the preparing network connections function?

wrong tack. if it was working correctly you wouldn't see but a flash of the preparing network screen.

what non-existant network was being registered?
are you connected to a router and are you getting an ip address?

Imagine the power if you knew how to internet search

I have dial-up. The modem connects and verifies my password but then says "registering computer with network." There shouldn't be any network as this is just a home computer but for some reason the computer is trying to connect with a network that doesn't exist. This also prevents me from getting on-line.

Exactly why I don't use any Registry tools.

Try this:

Make sure you don't have any other enabled connections in your "My Network Places."

Did you resetup your dialup connection along with account and password?

This message "registering computer with network." appears to me to be you logging into the ISP's dialup network.

You are failing most likely due to wrong account or password information. Correct that and you should be good to go.

I tried the snapfiles program but that is only for 2000XP and I only have 2000 professional so it didn't work. I have also uninstalled and reinstalled my ISP software and created new dial-up connections all to no avail. Someone suggested I upgrade to Service Pack 4 which I did but that didn't work either. If I could disable the preparing nextwok connections function during the boot process that might do it, but I have no idea how to do that.

You're partially right. :) The fix I posted is for XP, not 2000XP. :)

With a little searching I found this:

Howver, you didn't answer my question regarding any other Network connections being listed. Are there?

Thanks Jennifer,

I'll try the registry fix program. I don't have any other enabled connections in my network connections window other than my dial-up connection.

Hey Jennifer,

That registry fix program appears to have done the trick! I ran it on my computer and I no longer get the preparing network connections window and I am able to get back on-line again.

Thanks a million!
