Just wondering if there's a option setting under Win2K to switch off the PC when choosing "Shutdown". Currently selecting "Shutdown" will go through the shutdown procedure, but the PC ends up with a "It is now safe to turn off your computer" window at the end. The computer cannot be switched off from the power button and only removing power (or resetting and then switching off with power-on button) will work. I also have Linux installed on another partition and it shuts down the PC with a power-off, no problems ... Is there a fix around this annoying feature that I didn't ask for when installing Win2K ?? thanks, Mikem

If you have an ATX case, as opposed to AT, then your PC should power down okay under Win2k, if not you may be stuck with the problem.

Mike,
I think if linux knows to power off the pc, Windows should be able to send the same command to the hardware level. If not on sp2 already, try installing that. Also, go in Control Panel, Power Options, see if there is an APM tab in there, if so, check it.

This setting controls whether Windows should automatically power down or reboot your computer once it has finished the shutdown process on an atx board.

Open your registry and find the key below.

Create a new string value, or modify the existing value, called PowerdownAfterShutdown and set it to "1" to power off the computer at shutdown, or "0" to reboot.

Restart Windows for the change to take effect.

Note: This feature must be supported by the computer's BIOS.

System Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
Name: PowerdownAfterShutdown
Type: REG_SZ (String Value)
Value: (0 = default, 1 = power down)

I have the same problem Win2k doesn't power down on my desktop.
I modified the register but still doesn't work.

Back ground:
I have a laptop win Win2k and it works fine (even if the System Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
Name: PowerdownAfterShutdown
Type: REG_SZ (String Value)
Value: (0 = default, 1 = power down)
is set to 0.

My desktop, the one not working, was OK with WinNT4 (I assume is ATX and support soft power down)

Deduction the register isn't the main responsible for the PC non powerig down

Any clue?

Thank you,
Stefano
