Comment: I might have found a fix for this error. I had the same error today on my work machine and on my home computer. After checking this web site I reviewed my system to see if I was infected by all appearances I was not. No active task No registry entry No msblast.exe on my system. I ran the service patch from Microsoft and it appears to have corrected my problem. I would suggest you try the patch even if you system doesn't appear to be infected. Here is the link I used to download the patch http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/security/bulletin/MS03-026.asp
Hope this helps
Angelica

Reply: (edit)Angelica seems to be talking about the same thing that's going on with my computer (and seemingly everyone elses')... But what's this msblast.exe file? I've never heard of it and can find no real info on it via internet (mostly because my svchost is crashing, rendering Open in New Window useless, thereby slowing all my internet browsing down to 1/8th normal speed...) A few questions: How can I get rid of this msblast.exe file? What is it and where is msblast.exe located? Where exacly can I download the aforementioned (angelica) fix at for the svchost crash? If someone would please grant me a response, I'd be most grateful, as my computer is seemingly rendered useless at the moment.. =(

Reply: (edit)Thanks for the info... Trying to fix the problem as I write this, actually.. (downloading Win200 Security patch) Thanks for mentioning that msblast, otherwise I never would've known that it was a virus until my computer died... or something. (ps: My LAN party scheduled for next Friday is saved! Many, MANY thanks!!!!)

Reply: (edit)SVCHOST MEANS: We had PCs that got a message that the SVCHOST.EXE service was shutdown. This was caused by a failed attempt of this virus to infect the PC. Once this happens the user will have to reboot the machine. There are various things that stop working once this happens. The print window may not open. The Paste and other options will be grayed out in the menus. We also had servers that had the RPC process shut down. THE RPC PATCH - THE ONE ANGELIC IS TALKING ABOUT SEEMS TO REPAIR THE DAMAGE!

Reply: (edit)"The print window may not open. The Paste and other options will be grayed out in the menus. We also had servers that had the RPC process shut down." on ym 2k pro system i loose copy, paste, open in new window, internet connects (if i have to reconnect but otherwise fine when already connected), if explorer is closed (lose the taskbar) you cannot gain it back by running explorer.exe (it either locks or just opens the explorer window and no taskbar, control panel design is f---ed (all icons are in the left frame which is small and the right pane is empty), java commend to open a new window opens in same window or not at all, new java applets usely stop working (streaming content). probably tons more... problem with my cousin's xp system is that it still crashes svchost though it is patch. hasn't installed the virus since then but this is f---ing annoying... doing all patches at the moment and hopefully this fixes it :) tom
