Hi,

I have DSL and as long as I am connected I can and do receive annoying popup ads. I don't mean when I am surfing the net either. I long for the days when I only got them from surfing the net. anyone know how to remove them? I can be there working in photoshop and an annoying ad pops up.
please help.

You can try downloading spybot search and destroy as you likely have some spyware on your computer, also you can disable messanger in services under admin tools. This messanger has nothing to do with msn, yahoo or any of the other common chat programs. It is used in bigger networked environments where administrators need to send messages through the network.
Spam and adware has a way of getting in there.....therefore this closes another security hole.
control panel> admin tools> services> scroll to messanger, stop service, go to properties for that service, startup type on pulldown window, disable, ok, ok. might have to reboot.
good luck

YOu wouldnt happen to have any file sharing programs loaded in your system tray like Kazaa would you?? programs like that come loaded with spyware that normally give you popups like that.... take a look at what you got loaded.. and you might find the culprit.

Lavasoft Adaware is a fantastic program. Google search for it, download it, run it, and everything will be fine :)

Some of those popups, especially the ones that pop up when you are not connected are using messemger sevice, not windows messenger or im.

Right Click My Computer
Mange
Expand Services
Services
Right Click Messenger
Properties
Startup type
disable

This is the service that transmits alerter messages to and from clients and servers, so it may be something you need, and will have to put up with the pop ups.

If this is a home PC , just get a $40 router and hide behind the NAT. The pop ups won't get through, unless responding to a spy program as mentioned in the other replys.

Thanks a million. I think blenders advice might be working. I haven't gotten a pop up today, yet. Keeping my fingers crossed and knocking on wood. I already have lavasoft adware which I love (thanks for recommending it) and I was still getting them, and yes I do have kazaa lite which I know is bad bad in this regard. if they come back I may spring for that router. :)

thanks again!

Search the net for "NoAds" a pop-up blocker. This by far has done the best job for me over all other types of ad stopper's.
Also if you are getting a window like pop up box (one with a grey background) disable the Win2000 messenger service. You will have to be part of the Administrator's group to disable this.
Use Administrative tools in the Control Panel.
Start\settings\control panel\administrative tools\services.
Scroll down till you see messenger, right click on it and choose properties. Halfway down the box you will see Startup type, click the down arrow and choose Disable. Close the box and restart your computer.
No more pop-ups!

If you have an "always on" connection, then you ARE "on the Net".... (cf. Subject). If you disconnected, the Messenger Service popups would stop. The point being, that it's the fact that you are indeed on the Net that's causing the popups....
