Comment:

I have a network with 950 users logging on using Win98 clients, to a Windows 2000 Advanced Server (domain Controller - active dir.). I currently have the Win98 policy saved as the correct name (config.pol) in the Netlogon area, it works fine. However, if I attempt to add a group that I have created on my server, to that policy, the members of that group do not get the policy I just specified. If I add just the username instead of adding the group, then it works fine, but if I try and add a group to the policy, specify the restrictions, save and then logon as a member of that group, nothing happens, it is as if the policy file didnt exist.
ANY IDEAS?!?!

I found an interesting article a while back when I was trying to do the same thing.
Contrary to the names implication, group policies can not be applied against a group. They can be applied only against users and computers.

Hi,

Your problem is simple to solve. Just install the grouppol.dll that is on your win98 cd.
Go to start/settings/controlpanel/software.
Click on the tab "windows setup". Click on the button "Diskette". Manouvre on the windows-cd to tools/reskit/netadmin/poledit.
Klick on grouppol.inf and click OK. Then you see a window where you can place 2 checkmarks. 1 for grouppol.dll and one for poledit. Place a check in front of grouppol and klick OK a few times. Reboot and the policies will work with groups.

Be sure that you call your config.pol from the local registry!!! Make sure that you have a .adm where you see "Remote update".
Open the local registry and find that remote updatething. Choose for manual update and in the box underneath fill in: \\yourserver\netlogon\config.pol

I hope this helps....I know it will:-)

Bye,

Oh ja, take the grouppol from windows98SE. You really need one of the latest 98SE-cd's. On some normal 98-cd's the grouppol will not work.
