I am able to see both computers in network places, but when i try to access any files on my desktop (winxp) from my laptop (win2k) i get an "access denied" error. Conversely, i am able to access files from my desktop (winxp) to my laptop (win2k)..What am i doing wrong??????

You need identical user accounts with identical passwords on both system for sharing to be 100% both ways.

i tried that.. -- i added a user account to my xp machine identical to how i have my laptop set up running win 2000... i signed onto my xp machine using the exact same user id and password -- i'm still having the same problems...

side note -- my xp machine has 2 harddrives connected.. i am unable to access the c drive as i get "access denied" errors, but i am able to access my d drive with no problems..

arrrgggg sometimes xp has to be sooo difficult!!

Simply put - NO!. The format of a disk doesn't matter when being accessed over a network. The machine's OS takes care of reading its own HDDs.

Is it the Home version of XP that you're running?

Why can't you access the c: drive, or what makes you think you can't? Is the c: drive the 1st primary, active partition on on the 1st HDD? And D: the 1st primary, active partition on the 2nd? Check via Manage Computer, Disk Management.

i'm running win xp pro on my desktop and win 2k on my laptop.. --

i have two physical hard drives on my desktop.. the c drive contains the win xp operating system and my d drive is used basically for storage.. -- from my laptop, i am able to gain access to all files and folders on my d drive -- however, when i try to access files and folders on my c drive, i get an "access denied" error...now here's something strange -- i shared my c drive and am able to see the c drive from my laptop, but when i try to click on a folder, such as winnt, or documents and settings, or program files, or whatever, is when i get my "access denied" error...

do i have to individually share each folder under win xp????????

arrrrrrrrrgggggggggggggg

With you're latest explaination, it sounds more like a permissions issue.

I shared out my C: on XP and checked the Security permissions.

The Everyone Group has Read and Execute permissions to the C: drive. The Users Group has the same Read and Execute permissions as well as Create Folder\Append Data and Create Files\Append Data.

However

The C:\Windows folder doesn't allow the Everyone Group access (its not explicitly listed) and the Users Group only has Read and Execute permissions. No Write permissions.

I'd check to make sure that the W2k account you created is a member of the Users Group on the XP machine (it should have been done automatically). That should give you basic Read and Execute ability. Make that W2k account a memeber of the Power Users Group for almost full permissions, Administrators Group for Full permissions.

FYI: If you internet off these machines, its not a good idea to share out the full drive. Just share what you need. I use VNC internally to view files and folders on my other systems when needed. I can then share a particular folder on an as needed basis.

HTH

If I remember correctly, by default you are not allowed to share system files. You can override that setting by changing the share permissions.
As stated by Michael it is not a good idea to share the system files.

by default XP will niot allow accounts without a password to access its machine, you can either turn this off in the registry or add paswords to the accounts. If this does not work change it in the registry.

good luck.
