I have an AMD Athlon 700MHz, ASUS motherboard, a 128M of RAM and a GeForce 256 Elza Erazor X and everytime I play a game (In particular Half Life) it locks up. So far this is what I've done to try to fix this little problem:
-Installed the newest detonator drivers
-Installed VIA's Vdx for AGP
-Assigned an IRQ to VGA
-Changed the AGP aperture size to 256
and then to 64
-Changed video memory option to UC
-Changed AGP driving control to BA
-Disabled AGP fast writes
-Changed VGA BIOS sequence to PCI/AGP
-Installed several fans
-Visited expertcity.com

So far none of this has worked and I'm really desperate now so please, anyone HELP ME!!!!!!

I would suggest that you visit that bunch of girly-men over at Ars Technica Hardware Forum. All those guys ever think about is hardware and gaming. They are probably in a better position to help you.

If you have Windows 98 installed try playing the game in there. If it does not lock up then it is Windows 2000 not your hardware. Then goto the manufacture of the game and see if there is a patch for 2000.

It had nothing to do with your processor. the Athlon is just fine. It IS Windows 2000 treats some video modes. I've had the same problem with Halflife under Win2K, but it runs fine when I boot to 98. Haven't found a fix yet.

sorry, but it is so that AMD is known for bad Multimedia support, the most particular thing is that if you run Intel it's likely that you won't experience this problem. But it is also true that Intel and Microsoft are working together on the net. So why aren't they cooperative in adjusting their software i am running AMD and i have a Intel740 card installed and the Intel card causes my system to reboot when i scroll so Intel isn't perfect either.

about the 3dfx mode, it's nonsens you can get an OpenGL driver for your card which it's a lot better...
