the subject line says it all...well, here's the full story :) I can't print on my HP LJ4050N (not networked) from Explorer and Notepad -- I get an error saying 'An error occurred during this operation' (exclamation point in a yellow triangle) and I don't get a print window (although I think it pulls it up ever-so-briefly before the error)
I CAN print from MS Word and Outlook, maybe other programs, too...I've tried using the HP W2K driver, Microsoft's HP driver, and Microsoft's driver for the HP LaserJet 4+ -- none of them work in IE or Notepad
I'd REALLY appreciate your help -- I've been in 'vendor limbo' being passed from Microsoft, to Dell, to HP....
Any more questions or ideas, you can e-mail me directly to foswald@msu.edu, or post here -- THANK YOU

You may wish to consider setting a printer as default then attempting to print. If you don't have a default printer notepad usually won't print anything or ask for a printer.
One other thing, since IE is pretty well tied into EVERYTHING on your system [:-( you may want to go ahead and download the IE 5.5 update for Windows 2000. DiskMan

We have several HP4050TN's and many Win2K clients here at work. I also had some problems with this printer. You want to make sure you have the latest win2k drivers from HP. Remove the older drivers on the client boxes first.

What I've found is that there is a problem with Win2K and printing in several apps, but this only happens with certain user groups. Therefore, I believe it may have something to do with policies. There isn't a policy entry that is directly related to this, but I think there is another policy entry that is causing it, we just don't know which one yet.
We get the "Operation could not be completed" when trying to print from notepad, mspaint, and Internet Explorer. However, in Internet Explorer, you can print if you use the icon on the toolbar, just not from the file menu.
I've spent hours on the problem, and have not found a resolution.
