I had the NTLDR missing error, I tried repairing a win2k installation.. then rebooted and had the same problem. Since I have a dual boot system, I stuck a win98 boot disk in since I dont have a rescue disk, just the setup disks for win2k. I ran scandisk and started repairing the hard disk. It took many hours and a storm started to come in so I had to stop in the middle of repairing the directory structure. I fixed the first two checks though. I had many DIRXXXX directories, I was up to about 104 by the time I had to stop. When I restarted, I didn't even get to the point of NTLDR missing... it got up to the point of Verifying DMI Pool Data.... and it just hangs there with a blinking cursor. If anyone can help, please e-mail me because I dont know how many chances I'll get to check this board. I have over 4 years worth of work on this hard drive and my portfolio. I need to at least recover that. Thanks. Also: I think I got some kinda virus from a Macintosh. I was working on a project in Illustrator and Photoshop and copied the file over to my machine, when I rebooted my machine this error came up..

If you can get to the F8 screen do a LKGC and see if that does it.

Tom - there is a utility out there, the name of which I'm afraid I can't remember, which will allow you to access an NTFS drive (read-only) from Win98. Try google.com with a search string like (Windows 98) AND (NTFS reader) Fool around with it till you find it. I know this isn't helping with your main problem, but you may at least be able to recover your files before taking more drastic steps. You could also do a fresh install of 2000 into another home directory (install to c:\Win2K, say, instead of c:\winnt) Then you could (hopefully) boot to that OS and backup your files, then reformat and start the whole giddy round all over again. Good Luck! I know how unamusing losing several gigsworth of files can be.

The software he's talking about is from Winternals (http://www.winternals.com/) and is called "NTFS for W98". The read-only version is try-ware.
