I bought the win 2k and xp home discs off this bloke I kinda know, anyways, he didn't tell me they were the upgrade discs. I don't have any other windows operating systems (I mainly use a mac) so it will not install on an empty hard drive! I was wondering if it was possible to do something to the files on the discs so that they will install without asking for any other os discs or checking the hdd for an installed os. I really need to install 2k u see! Please help! Thanks.

No. It's not possible. Get yourself a legal version of the software.

my version is legal. Its got the identification thingy on the cd and everything. Also, I only got 2k for a tenner, and xp home fore 20. I'm not about to spend 150 on something I allready have, but just can't install... because I 'don't qualify' as it says.

OK, I was talking to my mate on ICQ, and said he downloaded this patch or something for 2k. What you do is rip the cd onto a hard disc, use the patch on the o setup.exe file and then burn it back to a cd. He gave me the webpage but it said 404 not found. So can anyone tell me where I can get this patch? I am currently on a deadline to get 2k on a hdd or I'm f***ed. Thanks.

While you can't install what you have directly, all you need is an older copy of windows to install first, then you can upgrade it. Check out www.pricewatch.com you can get win98 for around $65.

This is what you do. 1) Get a Win98 boot disk and boot your computer with it. 2) If your hard drive is COMPLETELY empty then copy the WINNT folder from cd on to your hard drive. 3) Reboot your computer with the win98 boot disk still in, once your back at the C:\ prompt type " cd winnt\i386 " then hit enter. 4) Then type at the c:\winnt\i386 prompt "winnt" and your computer will start the installation.
Good Luck!

Thanks. I have now installed 2k. But I am now interested in patching the cd's - it would remove the pain of ever having to do this ever again...
