Subject: Ping PRoblems !!! HELPOS: win 2k serverCPU/Ram: P3 |
Comment: I have got 2 servers, a win 2k server and a win 2003 server, the win 2k server is a domain controller, but the 2003 is just in the testing stage, about to be promoted. The live win 2k server was working perfectly, DNS,AD etc. Now here is what happened, I was able to ping the win 2k server by name and it was working fine, then 30 mins later, it stopped working. Between this time, nothing was chaged on both machines, just stopped working. But If I ping by IP address, then it responds. here is the configuration Win 2k server Domain Controller Static IP: 10.100.2.11 Subnet: 255.255.255.0 DNS server: 10.100.2.11 Win 2003 server Static IP: 10.100.2.10 Subnet: 255.255.255.0 DNS server: 10.100.2.11 ( 2k server) Dot on a domain, a standalne server ! Any help would be appreciated

Reply: (edit)From the sounds of it, this is a DNS issue...that's where I'd start looking. Begin by checking the DNS logs in Event Viewer and go from there.

Reply: (edit)bUT IS THERE a way of repairing DNS ?? I have never had any luch with rectifying it ? Also DNS is not installed on the windows 2003 server ! So how can it be DNS ? As the DNS on the Win 2k server is working perfectly, tested from other machines on the network. I have not also installed any firewall at all !

Reply: (edit)What happens when you try to ping the win2k server? Do you get any error messages? Is the name you're pinging a DNS name or WINS name? And like Curt R said, check your event viewer.

Reply: (edit)In that example, "tiger" would, presumably, be the WINS name of the server. Can you ping other computers by their WINS names? When you say "it can't find it", exactly what error message are you getting?

Reply: (edit)The error message is that "Ping request could not find host tiger. Please check the name and try again "

Reply: (edit)No, it's not. "tiger.mydomain.com" is a DNS name. "tiger" cannot, by definition, be a DNS name.

Reply: (edit)If your DNS is configured correctly when you ping "tiger" you should get a ping response that says tiger.domain.name and the ip address. check your DNS entries and make sure "tiger" has a host entry [A record] and a reverse lookup [PTR record]. Start with the host record. Look under DNS/servername/forward lookup zone/yourdomain name. See if "tiger" is listed.

Reply: (edit)How exactly does an unqualified name like "tiger" get translated to a fqdn like "tiger.domain.name"? That's a new one to me.

Reply: (edit)Thanks for the reply, tiger was not originally listed, so I added it manualy but all other computers in the domain were listed in the mydomail.com forward lookup zone ! Even after adding tiger, and also creating a PTR, I still dont get any ping response, but If I go to other computers, they ping correctly, and when they even ping, say I pinged tiger. It displays ping results for tiger.mydomain.com Which shows that other machines are working OK, but remember those machines are domain members, the win 2003 server is not part of the win 2k domain. Does that matter ?

Reply: (edit)Basically, I can ping the win 2k server, but I hae to ping it by the full DNs name, i.e tiger.MyDomain.com instead of just tiger !
