OS: Windows 2000 Server
CPU/Ram: P4 2.4Ghz; 512MB Ram
Comment:

I just installed windows 2000 server on my home pc and it doesn't seem to be functioning properly. Prior to the 2000 server, I had XP on there an it ran smooth - hardly any hang time...
Would anyone know any tweeks and quick fix?
SPECS: HDD- WD 7200RPM
RAM- 512MB
CPU- P4 2.4ghz

Verify that you have installed the MBoard chipset drivers and the graphics drivers. If the Software is older than the hardware it can't install proper drivers. Don't know if that is the situation here or not. Wnaderer is pretty knowledgable about Win2000 versions so you may need more RAM.

Not functioning properly -- please elaborate!

As to the lagging, I can't think what it might be, 512MB of RAM would run XP fine, never mind 2000.

Have you installed service pack 4?

No, I have not installed SP4. I reinstalled the server and noticed the lagging starts after installing the graphic drivers. Didn't know graphic drivers can do that. Or is it something else I'm missing?

depends on what you mean about lagging. I took your first post to mean you would click on something and there would be a time period before it happened.

Video stutter is a different matter. Lower the resolution and see if the stutter remains. Are the drivers 2000 versions?

Lagging: takes forever to boot up; takes a long time to run an application; mouse moves extremely slow;

The drivers I installed were the drivers that came with the video cards.. I'm sure it's the most updated, but not sure... i'll look into that aswell.

Its 2000. You need the 2000 drivers which should be OLD. Othehill has the right idea. Sounds like you are loading the wrong drivers.

Check your event viewer logs for errors to give you a specific clue as to what is wrong.

This is in no way a RAM issue. Windows 2000 runs perfectly on 128MB, let alone 512. If you have the IDE drivers installed, make sure UDMA is enabled in device manager for your IDE controllers.

I didn't think it would be ram either... I'll check on the IDE controllers.. Thanks

As I said in response #2, check to be sure you have installed the MBoard chipset drivers.

I'd like to know why the "downgrade" from WinXP to Win2K Server was necessary (or desired) in the 1st place?
