Is the laptop on the HCL (http://www.microsoft.com/hcl)? Go to the website of the motherboard manufacturer and download and install the latest BIOS update. Are the NIC drivers you are trying to install, Windows 2000 drivers? You might want to go to that manufacturer's web site as well and see if they have Windows 2000 drivers for their NIC.

I have the same issue on a Compaq 1200 - XL110. It IS on the W2K HCL and the drivers are W2K drivers. I called Compaq and they are no help because even though the laptop is on the HCL THEY don't support it.

Same thing here with a Sierra Wireless AirCard 300 CDPD. Sierra Wireless was no help at all. They've never seen the problem. I have a Compaq 1200-XL111. My 3Com/Megahertz 10/100 Cardbus card works fine. I'm running Windows 2000 SP1.

The Ricoh cardbus controller seems to be the problem. My Sony PCG-F580K will not recognize any PCMCIA cards under Win2K. The Microsoft knowledge base article doesn't apply to the Sony because the soundblaster emulation isn't switchable from the BIOS.

I have the same problem with a Toshiba Libretto 110CT, which I've upgraded to Win 2K Pro. I haven't been able to locate any drivers for the PCMCIA floppy disk drive for Win 2K.

Ditto the last message. Flash cards show up as MTD-0002 on my Dell Desktop running Win2k and Dell was no help at all. Time to re-install with Win98? Would that even work?

Yes... I would also like to thank the person who posted the information on the MTD-0002 conflict. I have been wrestling with this issue since windows released the Evaluation Version of W2K Professional and Server and disabling the sound blaster in the bios worked like a charm.

Great news, but my home built clone (Abit motherboard) running an add-on Soundblaster doesn't offer me the choice of the solutions listed above. So I've got to now buy a new sound card and cross my fingers, I guess. Or throw away my PCMCIA card reader.

Cripes.

I went to the Microsoft sight above http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q274/5/09.asp and went into the BIOS (F10, then "Advanced" menu, then "Built-In Device") - and disabled the Sound blaster ONLY (NOT Onboard PCI AUDIO). Compaq Presario 1200 XL-111.
PS: sound card (VIA) and Webcam (EZ Cam Pro- USB) work very fine, also !! ;-)
