Subject: PC with Win2000 Pro question...OS: Windows 98SECPU/Ram: 566Mhz Celeron/64MB |
Comment: I am buying a new PC (Well, not new new, but, semi-custom built) 400Mhz 128MB RAM and Win2k Pro, however, before I get it, I am learning programming (Pascal and soon to be learning BASIC in a few days) I program DOS programs, at the moment (Haven't learned Windows programming, yet....) So, I am wondering, will I be able to play/compile my DOS games on a Win2k box? (My 566Mhz/64MB 98SE box is dead, though I think the harddrive still works) or, can I install MS-DOS with Win2k? (I believe Win2k uses the NTFS file system, which you can't read from DOS, because DOS needs FAT16 or FAT32 to run?) or would I be better off if my old HD still works to run a dual boot with 98SE? or a dual boot with MS-DOS or DR-DOS 7.02?

Reply: (edit)First of all, what year are you in (programming in Basic and getting an new 400MHz pc)? Second, I think you should post this in the coding forum. Third I think you will need to do a dual boot in 98SE because of the different DOS versions as you mentioned. TECHZAPORT OUT!!!

Reply: (edit)Well, the thing is, is I am just starting out with programming for one, and 2 I can't really afford a half-way decent system, where as I will be paying $100 for this system (With the full Win2k Pro disk, its NOT and upgrade or a restore disk!)

Reply: (edit)Oh, and the other thing is, that this isn't entirely about coding/programming, I meant it to be more about installing a dual boot 98SE/MS-DOS system with Win2k Pro being the main OS, sorry for the confusion...

Reply: (edit)Hi, I think you will want a dual boot. If so, install 98 and get it all set up. Then install 2K.. 2K can be NTFS, but doesn't have to be. When you compile and run you programs, be careful; be backed up. HTH

Reply: (edit)Well, will it still be as fast, and secure if I use a FAT32 partition with Win2k pro? or would I be better running a emulator with DOS, and having a NTFS file system?

Reply: (edit) SINCE THIS IS A FAIRLY NEW THREAD ON ABOUT THE SAME TYPE OF PROBLEM IM HAVING! THOUGHT ID GIV U EXPERTS A TRY? first off im a pretty novice user , learn as i go,lol!! i hav a old 200 pro machine with 128 megs of simms ramm at this time. i hav two HD'S both 6GB, one i hav partitioned to 2 egual partitions. this i plan to dual boot 98se&2000pro to. this is being done for the simple fact that some of my programs wont run on 2000pro! but yet i need 2000 pro for certain drivers, now here is where im stumped, my thought is to place a os on each partition and then use the other HD to place my software applications and data on, to be axcessed by the OS'es for use. am i on the right track here guys or am i looking at getting into a whole lot of head aches? plz advice me as to weather i should scrap this idea or not, as i would like my putor back up as soon as possible. THANKS ALL
