Hi everyone,
I just bought a brand new computer a few months ago and now, I am experiencing some problems with this machine.
I have win2k installed and the pc always keeps rebooting on its own. I've scanned my computer several times for viruses and found none. I formatted the H.D.D. and reinstall win2k, and I still have the same problem.
I even tried to install win98 and the pc still reboots on its own from time to time.
Is it possible that some viruses cannot be detected and that screw up my machine?
Please I need help!!

more likey it's hardware related, check all the fans, check your CPU fan to make sure it's working ( an over heated CPU will cause such things to happen,) low voltage also. When does it reboot? After it's been on all day? As soon as you boot up? When you open a certain program? We need to know these things and more to be able to help you.

I had the same thing happening, even when I was away from the PC. Following suggestions on this forum, I opened the case and left it open and had no more problem, indicating it was overheating despite 4 fans.

is there any way to tell if your CPU is overheating? I mean, would the case actually feel overly warm? Or is there a freeware prog out there that measures it for you?

It's probably Heat / Power Supply related as described above, but what you didn't mention in your trouble shoot was the BIOS.
Check and see if any reboot or Wake_On_LAN functions are enabled via modem, NIC or other connection to rule out any networked or directly connected device sending inadvertant reboot commands to your PC.

I have a Maxdata Laptop Pro 700T. Pentium III, 128m Ram, 10gb hardrive, Toshiba DVD Rom Drive, 8mb ATI Mobility Graphics Card. I'm suffering from the same problem, is still likely to be fan related on a laptop?

Could be the system board on a laptop. I had one of my users experience this on a Dell. First thing I would try is swapping the HD with another one to see if it still happens. Make sure all drivers are updated.(Video, chipset, etc. Apply the latest bios flash. I have also seen integrated NICs cause this and upgrading the drivers seemed to solve the problem.

Thanks,
I'll try that. Just reinstalled OS so problems yet so far. Perhaps I just overloaded my computer with too much stuff, its rebooting in protest!
