PC card modem not working in W2K

After upgrading to Windows 2000 on my Gateway Solo 2300 notebook my PC modem does not respond. W2K sees it fine, except diagnostic doens't run. I switched to a second modem and Windows detects it instantly as well, but neither work.

Have tried un/re-installing completely several times.

Both are US Robotics Megahertz, one is
33.6 XJ1336 the other is XJ-C5560 56K

I've looked for updated drivers but found nothing on US Robotics site specifically for Windows 2000.

Can anyone shed any light on this?
