hi, i just bought a laptop off of ebay, and cant get into it because i dont know the password to get past the novell signing on screen! any ideas?

Ask the seller for the password. They should know it unless they stole it.

Are you hoping to keep Novell [and the former owner's problems] or are you trying to arrive at the point of installing your own software?
I'd assume the latter, since you're in the w2k forum.
If intent is to install w2k, the password on Novell won't matter. Just wipe it and start afresh.
