Reply: (edit)Below you will find two instrtuctions for removing and/changing administrator Password. I only trasfered these instructions from previous posts, so I have no idea if they work. Is it the administrator's password that has been changed ? If it has there are a few ways to bypass the password. Windows passwords are stored in a SAM file. To get it follow the following steps. 1) The password file is probably on an NTFS drive. The SAM file is locked out by Windows and can therefore not be read in it's location whilst the native OS is running. Therefore you need to either read it from DOS or Linux. Stick to DOS. (I'll probably be hung for that) 2) Goto www.sysinternals.com and download a copy of NTFSDOS. Then download a copy of L0phtCrack 2.52 from www.securitysoftwaretech.com/l0phtcrack/download.html and run it on the Win2K machine that works. 3) On the knackered machine, boot off of a bootable floppy into DOS and run NTFSDOS. This will allow you read NTFS partitions. Goto the SAM file and copy it onto the floppy. (c:\winnt\system32\config\sam) 4) Now take the disc and put it into the computer that is running L0phtCrack and import the SAM file. This will then use sheer brute force to hack the password. It takes a little time (10mins to an hour) but it does work so well it's frightening. 5) GO back to the computer that's locked out and boot it up. Enter and change the password. As for a book, if you're reasonably good at Win2K then get Exam Gears' Windows 2000 Professional MCSE training guide. If you want a simpler one then get QUE's Practical Windows 2000 Professional. Oh yes. I would allow guest logons to the computer with VERY limited rights and disable the function that allows users to change their passwords. (Control Panel -> Users & Passwords -> Advanced -> Advanced -> Select the user and go to properties and check the box 'User cannot change password.' Hope this helps.
There is actually a much easier way to do this. There is a Linux utility that will allow you to boot and change admin password for WinNT and Win2k. Do a search for "NT +Password +Linux" ... You should find it with not problem. If not and you want it, e-mail me and I will send it to you.
