I've been talking to a friend of mine about partitioning my drive. I'd like to have Win2k as my main OS and Win98SE and Mandrake Linux as the other OSs. But when he was talking about partitioning, he totally confused me. All I understood is that Win2k go on a primary DOS partition, but he lost me after that. Do Win98SE and Linux go both on one extended partition or do I have to create more or do I have to make another primary DOS partition (isn't one primary enough?). Also, in what order should I install them? Thanks a bunch!

ok, you first will want to install win98se, then win2k, then Mandrake. Always install the oldest OS first. as far as the partitions go, you did not say what size drive you had, but lets assume that you have say a 20 gig drive. make a 5 gig primary dos partition for win 98 and format it fat 32. then make a 10 gig extended dos partition for win2k and format it NTFS. then make another 5 gig extended dos partition and dont format it for now. Install win 98se first, then install 2k, after that pop in the setup cd for mandrake and it will prompt you to select which partition you would like to install on, choose the unformatted partition and it will format it ext2 for you and then your done.

Win2k and Linux can be installed on logical partitions but win98 has to be on a primary partition. I used partition magic 6.0 and it works alright but it doesn't support ntfs.(I just do my conversions with win2k). Also, use lilo as your boot manager, it will see your windows partitions. It's fun.

OK, so let me get this straight:
1. I install Win98SE and put it on a primary DOS partition
2. In install Win2k on a logical partition in an extended partition.
3. I install Mandrake on the remaining free space.
This is how it goes, right? Oh, another thing: my cousin wants to do the same, but he already has Win2k and wants to add Win98SE and a Linux distro (Gentoo or something). Any suggestions?

PartitionMagic 6 certainly does support NTFS! Imight add the best info you will ever find on partitioning and multiple OS's are in the PartitionMagic manual/guides
