I am having troubles partitioning my hard drive. I just bought a new hd and would like to put ME and 2000 on it. I created the Primary partition and the Extended partition. I created 3 logical drives in the extended partition. I formatted the c: drive and tried to format the d: drive (extended partition). It would not let me. So i installed win ME then tried to install 2000 into the other partition. Needless to say it wouldn't work. I have a zip, burner, dvd, and my hardrive. Does that pose a problem. I try to access the d: drive while in windows and it says device is not hooked up properly. The d: drive use to be my zip drive. If any one has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate them.

If ME is on C: drive put the W2K cd in the drive while running ME and when it asks if you want to upgrade say no and pick clean install. Watch for a screen that allows a choice of installation and choose to pick the partition and then just point to the area where you want to install and you can then partition and format where you want the w2k innstalled. It will set it up for a dual boot for you.
If you want ME to see the W2k drive and folders you have to format fat32.NTFS is a lot more secure and w2k will see all the drives and folders.

Shovel, his problem is NOT installing windows. He is having problems formatting one of his partitions.

Chad, is the new HDD on the primary IDE channel?

Using FDISK, choose the 4th option on the main menu to display partitions and see if there are more than 1 DOS partition. You can have upto 4 primary DOS partition. However, in order for Windows to boot up properly, you can only have 1 DOS partition set active.

Did you type "format d:" (without the quotes) and if so, what message did you see on your screen?

I would start by choosing option 4 (as explained above) and see exactly how many partitions you have.

Other than that, I can only suggest to delete all your partitions (logical, extended, primary) in that order, and then start fresh.
