Hello Forum:
I would like to add to this discussion, I have discovered a newly created Pagefile.sys on my C: (boot) drive. ( the reason it is newly created is I just noticed my drive free space diminishing and the modified date for Pagefile.sys was current. So I was wondering if I could delete the Pagefile.sys file and reboot so that windows 200 Pro (my OS) would create it again with smaller size. Currently it is 782 MB (too large). Suggest me something.

And one more thing, I have 4 GB of C: with nothing on it besides OS (no data files) and it occupies 2.36 GB of my C:. Can anybody suggest some better means to reduce this occupied space(I think its more than what it should be). I have all of my things installed on other drive, however i think that some files from every install are stored on boot drive, but even then it can't account for so much space.

Sorry for such a long query but would appreciate a response.

Thank you for your patience and time.

Morphius

The size of your pagefile.sys is the same as the size of your RAM. However I believe there is a way to change that in your control panel. I would not recommend deleting it; I would rather change the settings in the control panel.

To free up so space you should delete your Temporary Internet Files (do it from internet options), and also everything in the TEMP folder. Files in there are just for temporary use by applications.

Make sure your recycling is clean.

WHEN THE W2K BOOT IS LOOPING ON THE LOGIN SCREEN ;ANSWER :
Hi , your pb is that u have your swap file corrupted or on an another drive or u tried to move your windows file in an another place ( the path tothe swap file cannot be find by w2k )
the only way to fix it is to access to your registry trought out a lan connection with an other pc ;
go to regedit > registry> connect network registry ; type your computer name and once remotely connected , make a ctrl-f on the the swap file usely pagefile.sys and , after a control where your pagefile.sys is installed , indicate the right path to it ;
if the path was formerly right ,the file is corrupted or not big enough ;it must be 3 times bigger than your ram ;
remenber that the pagefile.sys must be at the root of your drive !!!
sorry for my approximate english;i'm a french that cannot windowsbush 2003 lies.

pagefile.sys is a hidden system file and can be found by windows win-explorer->tools-> folder options->view and select show hidden files and folders and deselect hide protected operating system files. or from dos window dir /ah c:\pagefile.sys. windows must know the path to the file or its paging function simply would not function.

recommendations for the swap file size varies, but the standard is between 1.5 and 2 times the size of system memory. for a 512mb ram system, that would be 768mb to 1gb; a 256mb system would see 368mb to 512mb for a swap file size (I'm running 1.5gb with 768mb ram system).

you can easily change the swap file size by right-clicking on my computer->properties-> advanced->performance options->change... which allows you to set the swap size and to span disks. note that you can set a min and max size, but the advice is to set min=max=1.5x to 2x system ram size to stop the dynamic sizing of the pagefile that can lead to potential corruption.

if you have a corrupted pagefile, another tact is to boot ntfs from cd and delete the pagefile.sys. Reboot the system from the hdd and windows will create the pagefile and allocate the appropriate space to it.

cheers
