How can you maintain ownership of files when they are moved (or copied) from one server (NT 4) to another (Win 2000) by an administrator? These files are not owned by the administrator but must maintain their ownership after the move (or copy).

Nilesh, don't reply to a question with another question - start a new post.

Bart, when you copy a file from one location to another, a new file is created. Therefore any permissions will inherit the permissions of the parent folder to which the file is copied.

When you move a file, it depends on where you move it to. If you move within the same partition or volume on dynamic disks, the file(s) will retain their original permissions because a new file is not created on a move within the same partition. If you move a file to another partition or volume, a new file is created and will follow the same rules as a copy process.

Now, there is a utility called SCOPY that should already be on your system or may require the resource kit, I don't remember. It will copy files and folders to and from NTFS paritions with security intact. You may want to look into that.

Good luck.
