This site won't let me respond to an old message concerning the above problem. However, here is a solution:
I was having condsiderable trouble with the stability of my Windows machine here at home. The more Service Packs I downloaded, the more my system would become flaky. My LCD screen would freeze up and display two large rectangles or I would get an "out of range" message inside of a small blue box when the resultant freeze occurred. The only way to regain functionality was to reboot. This last Service Pack seemed to work but degraded rapidily to the point I could not get in as me but I could barely get in as "administrator".
I went out to the internet and found that "I should update my adapter card driver and monitor driver. I did but no success.
I finally removed all non essential cards. When my USB 2.0 card was removed, the system became stable. In my motherboard manual, it says that the onboard USB (1.1?) is not compatible with USB 2.0 cards. I had to disable my onboard USB in the bios. That did the trick.
The problem with this whole thing was that it did not show up immediately. I had the USB 2.0 card installed for quite some time before the system became flaky.
