I'm also having this problem. My computer recently decided it didn't want to read my keyboard or mouse, when I shipped it back to the person I bought it from he said everything worked fine for him. I just got it back and now my cds won't play and the drive doesn't show up in windows. I'm running Windows 2000 Pro and I don't know the details of the computer's components but it is supposed to be a pretty good system.
Any help would be truly appreciated!!!
Thanks. :)
Kristen

Brand of the computer?
Sounds like a loose cable/wrong jumper setting.
Ben,
Pentium 4 1.7GHz, 256 Cache
512 DDR RAM PC2700
ATI Radeon 9200SE 128 DDR RAM
Western Digital 80GB 7200 RPM

I'm not sure of the brand, it was a custom job. Is there a way I can find out?
Does the cable/jumper setting explain what happened w/ the keyboard and mouse as well?
Thank you!

To me it sounds very fishy. I didn't read the part about the keyboard and mouse. Have you put the keyboard and mouse in the correct port since they do look similar?
Only other reason for this I would suspect is a faulty board yet it does not add up unless the person you sold it to did not use the same keyboard/mouse.

The mouse/keyboard were in the correct ports to begin with, when he used a different set he didn't have a problem. When he sent it back to me, it worked fine again, except for the missing drive.
Thanks very much for your advice, I appreciate you taking the time to help me. :)

so you are saying that the cd drive was working with the keyboard/mouse problem occured?
Is the cd drive inside the computer or is outside and attached using a cable (eg USB)?

Ben
When the keyboard and mouse wasn't be read I couldn't get the computer to load all the way (because it requires a password which I couldn't enter) so unfortunately I don't know. I do know that it worked prior to that that though.
The cd rom/burner is inside the computer.
Thanks,
Kristen :)

Hi Kristen,
it seems inevitable that you will have to end up opening up the case of the computer to check about the cd-burner. You might need a cross headed screwdriver to open the case or a top of a knife is a good substitute.Cases nowadays have screws which you just twist instead of using a screwdriver. Unscrew the screws on the right of the computer (looking from back of the PC) and take the panel off and find the cd-burner.
There should a minimum of two cables connected to the cd drive: 1) power cable (red, black, black, yellow) 2) IDE cable (white except on one of the sides should have a red line). Make sure these cables are properly connected to both the cd-burner. Also, make sure that the IDE cable is properly connected to the mainboard (it is the biggest board on the computer and has a side dedicated for it. Ussually the left if you have a tower case.
Post back if you have any problems.
