If you're not worried about losing any data, fdisk, format, and reinstall. If there is a problem with the drive, get a diagnostic disk from the manufacturer and see what it tells you. Maybe you can get a replacement sent to you.

Man I hate computers.

You will NOT lose your files, because Win2k will ask if you want to install over the excisting Win2k or clean install to another directory. So say yes to the new directory.

This may sound funny, but if your system is a few years old it may be that the CMOS battery on the motherboard is dead or dying. If your bios has an incorrect time and date, replace the battery (2032 size lithium) and re-setup the bios. I've fixed several computers with the "operating system not found" problem with this easy fix. Of course, it may be the first sector of the hard drive is corrupted. Good luck.

Same thing happened to me.
Try starting from a windows 98 setup floppy. At the a: type
sys c:

then fdisk/mbr
You will probably need to reinstall windows 2000, and you will loose your My Documents folder.

EJ, this is win2k, not 98. The win2k way to do that would be to goto the recovery console, then type:
fixboot
