Onboard sound device doesn't work

Hi I have the onboard sound device CMI8738/C3DX and it works fine with Win98. The driver was installed using the motherboard's CD. But now, I've just installed win2000 pro and the sound doesn't work. I tried to install the driver using both: the CD and using Windows Update. The installation process ends successfully but the PC is always "dumb". I don't see any conflict problem, error message, nothing. If someone knows how can I do my PC sounds with Win2000, help me, please. Thanks.

Go to the web site for your motherboard and download Audio drivers for W2000. If this file is an .exe file, then just install and reboot. If not an .exe file, then thru device manager, highlight your sound device and select "update drivers". Reboot and your sound should work in W2000. My onboard sound has seperate drivers for 9x, NT, W2K, & XP.

Watch out for the Windows Update for onboard sound. I ran it and it disabled the sound on my FIC board. The sound came back as soon as I removed the update.

Did you look at the Advanced properties of your volume control? (Double click instead of single click the speaker icon on the System Tray). Sometimes Windows mutes or sets the volume all the way down on certain audio channels, like Wave or Aux-in.
