I had long time ago on a cd a beta version of Ms Office 2003 that I had never tried so I thought I'd give it a shot so I installed it but when I tried to run it, it said : your copy of office has expired so I went to control panel to uninstal it but the remove button in add/remove was greyed out. Can I safely delete it manually in windows explorer without any harm and install another version of office ?

Start the O3 install and you should have the option of remove.
Deleting the Office program folders alone can have serious impact on your system since you need all the registry entries removed as well.
