I have a client and server, both with appropriate windows 2000 o/s. My hub shows activity along with the on-board nics on both systems. Also, both on-board nics are enabled. I am able to ping both client and server and receives 4 replies each. The client is named Mother. When I open a command prompt on the server and type c:\ping \\mother, I get the following response, unknown host \\Mother. Prior to building the above stated two systems, I have been networking clients and servers in NT 4.0 with no problem. I am not that familiar with Active Directory and do not know if this is an issue or not. What am I doing wrong?

I forgot to state that the server is a P4 1.8 Ghz and the client is a Celeron 1 Ghz.

It will always fail if you type ping \\mother. You should leave the \\ off of the command and just type the server name.
example: ping mother

because this is a dns failure,i think you should modify the "host" file or something like this, add one line "mother, the ip address of mother".the "host" file is the default dns lookup before you specify a dns server.

why dont you just ping the machines by IP address, providing they have static IP's or you know the IP's
