Hello to everyone,
I have a pretty big problem. May be you guys can help me resolve it. I resently installed a some new software on my win2k proffesional box. durring the installation the system froze and I was forced to reboot my machine manually. Once I reboot I get this greeting saying that my NTOSKRNL.exe file was corrupted or missing. Well I searched for some resolutions and found a few. Do you all think if I just copy this file from my other Win2k box to my corrupted drive would help me. I am trying to fix this issue with the least modifications to the registry on my machine, since I have several critical software that I need to have on this box.
Any suggestion are appreciated.thank you,
SAM

sam, you can just try insering the W2K CD (bootable) in there and reboot. When you see the choices menu, just choose to repair.
Then follow the instructions on the screen, carefully reading every notification/choice menu.
That should take care of you.

If I choose repair, will it format my current c:\partition? The reason is that I already have some apps installed and they need some complex configuration
thanks
SAM

Hi,
I tried repairing this problem with the cd and it asked me for some repair disks.?????
I know you can create emergence repair disks in the back up program but i didn't do so whent the O/S is up and running.
What can I do Now. Please reply.
Many Thanks.

If you follow the advice given in Response No. 6 (above) you will see that for NT 4.0, you won't have to use the installation CD. You just need to boot up into DOS and edit a file on your C: drive.
>
Edit your Boot.ini file and change the partition information by performing the following steps:
Remove the Read Only and System File attributes from the Boot.ini file by typing the following command at an MS-DOS or OS/2 command line:
Attrib -S -R C:\Boot.ini
Edit the Boot.ini file and change the partition number for Windows. In most cases, you need to increase the partition number by one. A typical Windows line in the Boot.ini file looks similar to the following, where x is the partition number and is the name of the folder into which Windows is installed:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(x)\="Windows NT Workstation Version 4.00"<
So, you would be modifying this entry where partition (x) becomes partition (y), and y = x=1.
If you don't have a DOS OS installed on the hard drive, you can create or borrow a DOS boot disk from jst about any computer that does have DOS installed. See:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=create+DOS+boot+disk&btnG=Google+Search
Not so bad, huh?

Addendum:
Oh yeah. I would urge you to take NT questions to the NT forum, as some other issues which are applicable to NT receive diffent treatments in Windows 2000.

I get the same problem, but in a dif way.
I have my hard disk partitioned into 5, (60 gig). I had win98 and 2k dual booted on drive c, and as windows does, it slowly broke down in 98, and then in 2k, so I formatted C.
I went to install 98, cos u have to install 98 before installing 2k if you wish to dual boot, and 98 setup ran, scanned for errors, non found, and began to install.
Everything was fine untill it got to setting up the time zone and detecting hardware, etc. Then MSGRV crashes followed by rundll32 and some kernel.
I tried installing 2k instead, and I get a crash saying there is a problem in a number of dif files (says a dif one each time), one of them been ntoskrnl.exe, and a load of memory adresses followed by saying to check wether I have memory cacheing or shadowing enabled in my bios, which I dont.
I tried fiddling with my memory to see if either of the sticks had blown, no luck. I then tried putting in my old hard disk which had win2k installed on it (I never bothered clearing it), and I got the ntoskrnl.exe is missing or corrupt error.
Obviously my problem is alot deeper than it just missing or corrupt, im thinking my processor has gone faulty or my motherboard is playing up, but I cant be sure...
If anybody has any idea what is going on, then please do tell. I dont know if this place emails me when a reply is posted so if somebody could please email me that would be brilliant.
Thanks.ALCHEMlST
