I'm attempting to change a 15.6 GB partition form the NTFS file system, to FAT32, using Partition Magic Pro 7.0. When I try to do this, I get the error "Files are either compressed, or sparse". What does this mean, and how do I fix it? I tried defragmenting, but it didn't help.

Hello,
As far as I know you can't change the file system without deleting the partitions (make sure you back up your data) and formating the harddrive. You can use fdisk (on a win98, me startup disk) to create a new Fat32 filesystem partition, but it will not work on deleting an NTFS partition. You nee to find a freeware program called DelPart.exe or something to remove the NTFS partition and the run Fdisk to create new partition. Look on the freeware sites for delpart or email me.

Fdisk will delete an NTFS partition. Just select "delete non-dos partition" and your NTFS partition is history!

Win2k under NTFS uses compressed files, uncompress your files then do the conversion, it should work now. And Rick is right in that usually you can't do that type of conversion, however Partition Magic and other types of partition software will convert ntfs to fat as well as other types of file systems.
