Comment:

I upgraded my dell pc with windows 2000 from windows 95 and then decided to have a second HDD installed. This was installed and I then installed windows 2000 again on the new HDD and (stupidly) formatted my c: drive. Now when I boot up I get 'NTDLR is missing'. What can I do to rectify this without paying to get it fixed? HELP PLEASE!!

More information is needed to solve this problem. What is the new drive letter? D? Is that where windows 2000 is NOW currently installed ?

Three files are either corrupted, or missing on the drive your NORMALLY have booted up on in the past. This solution might work:

Get into the recovery mode of the computer, by booting from your CD (if thats possible), or with your four windows installation disks.

Once into recovery mode, locate from the newly created installation these three files:

ntldr, ntdetect.com and boot.ini

Copy these files to your boot disk ROOT DIRECTORY, Drive C. If all goes right, you should reboot, and have them detected on C, and then boot windows 2000 on D.

You can't get your data back from C, as you've reformatted the drive. Also, if you want to put windows 2000 back on C, you must first reinstall windows 95, and then perform the upgrade to Windows 2000, since you apparently don't have the full blown copy.

Once you have stablized everything, take a minute, grab a floppy and copy those 3 files to the floppy, and store it in a good place. Just in case you might need them again. It will save you a lot of heartache in the future, if you get the NTLDR Blue Screen of Death again.

Ain't it a pisser ?

Good luck.

Probably not as it's an old machine and most people in the office use NT
