ntbackup.exe will not open GUI

Hello,
Using W2K Pro SP2. Recently, ntbackup.exe will not launch. Makes no difference whether I run from system tools, command prompt, click on icon in system32 folder, or even attempt launch in Safe Mode; the result is always the same - the process loads (as seen in task manager), but the control (GUI) window does not open on the desktop (so obviously, I cannot interact with the utility). Killing the process in task manager and relaunching results in same dysfunction. The program is where it should be in WINNT/system32. So what the hey!
Apart from the obvious inconvenience of not being able to backup my system,I am very curious as to why a program whose process loads properly will not launch it's GUI.
Can anybody out there point me in the right direction? I have done an extensive web search on this problem to no avail. Is there a registry value that might have been reset by some evil program? Can one uninstall/reinstall ntbackup? I would be extremely grateful for any advice.

That's very odd behaviour! You might try booting to the 2000 CD, starting an install and choosing the Repair option. This might fix your backup problem.
