NTBACKUP and VERITAS problem

I have a dell poweredge server with windows 2000 server and travan backup drive. It has the Veritas Backup exec installed which works fine. However, when I try to use NTBACKUP.exe which I prefer, it says that no media is available even though there is a tape in the drive. When I go to the hardware manager there are no errors and it shows that it is working fine. When I go into computer management it shows that the drive is unavailable. I have tried clicking "uninstall" and then reboot so that windows reinstalls it but had no luck. It seems that the Veritas has control of the drive and has "reserved" it. The question is how do I get the drive freed up for NTBACKUP? Has any one experienced this? Or does anyone have any advice on this? Thanks in advance if you do.

I use veritas backup mostly so not sure if this can help, but can you clean the drive, then inventory the tape? Also can you stop the veritas services and then try to use NTBackup?
