I hope someone out there can help. I have an NT 4.0 Domain with several win2k standalone servers. Here is my issue. I am trying to attach a new win2k machine to my vertas backup system. I need to have a backup user added to the new machine, this user is a psrt of the domain. All I can do at this point is add a user locally to the machine. Does anyone have any idea how to add a domain user other than admin to a win2k server. May I add that when I go to the control panel there is not an icon for addind users. Many thanks in advance.

Tom

I hope I understand you correctly but if you have a stand alone w2k server and an NT4 domain, then if you want a domain user you need to add them to the NT4 domain. It sounds like you are asking how to add a user to the w2k domain but you don't have a w2k domain.

The only other thing I can grasp from your post is that you want to add an existing domain user to the local backup operators group on your server. If you right click on My Computer, Properties, local users and groups, groups, then select Backup Operators and click Add. Then in the Look In box select the Domain and select the user you want.

Hope this helps.

Glen- I am trying to add a user from my nt domain to the win2k machine. I need to have a trust relationship on the win2k box with my domain. However I do not have any way to do this. All I can do is add the user locally. I would like to log on to my domain using the account I add to this machine. I tried to do what you suggested on your post but it did not work. I hope this clarifies this some. Thanks again.

You do not need a trust relationship. Trust relationships exist between domains, not between computers or computers and domains. Is your w2k machine a member of your NT domain?

I don't know if you fully understand the type of accounts. You can not add a domain account to your local computer. You can however add domain accounts to local groups on your computer which is what I was explaining in my previous post. When you say " I would like to log on to my domain using the account I add to this machine - " well, you can't. In other words, you can not log on to a domain with a local account. That is the difference between domain accounts and local accounts. You can however log into the domain, with a domain account, from the w2k machine if that machine is member of your NT domain.

Hope that helps a bit.

You did indeed make this more difficult.

You can right click my computer and goto manage.

At this point goto users/groups and add the user you feel you need. With a trust you should be able to use members of the NT 4 domain as with a trust you should be able to see the drop down menu and choose to add NT 4 domain users to a group like backup Operators.

Viper, I may have made it more difficult but at least I was accurate. There IS NO TRUST between computers. Forget about a trust, there is none. You can not add domain users to a computer. You can only add domain users to local computer accounts as I described.

He will only see the drop down list of domain users if that pc is a member of the NT4 domain - also as I stated in my previous posts.
