Comment:

I formatted a troublesome PC and reinstalled win2k only(formerly dual boot with win 98). during the install I was not prompted for the product key, which I thought strange and upon the first boot it freezes on the splash screen. Any Ideas?? I have gone through the process twice with the same result.

If you can afford the trouble, erase the hard drive with a program like Active@Killdisk boot disk(free for first physical hard drive).Partition and format the drive right after and run Windows 2000 setup. If there is a problem with the drive like boot virus, bad physical sectors etc.it should be fixed and enable completing the job.

Good luck.

I think you are on the right track with this killdisk. Somehow it seems there are still detectable remaining bits on the fomatted hard drive. This sounds bizarre to me but probably possible?? will let you know how I go.

format c: (directory installing on) and then scandisk /surface (i think) but if wring you still need to scan the surface of it as there might be something wring and scandisk will tell windows not 2 touch thoses damaged sectors
