We're using Win2k/Active Directory, with Win98 currently, and upgrading to XP. We use a Windows app that still uses printers like a DOS app, so I need to be able to redirect the LPT1: port to a network printer. This works fine for Win98, but in WinXP, when the logon script executes, it says access denied, or asks for username/password. All users have permissions to use the printer, and it can be installed as a network printer through the printer wizard. Only administrator can redirect the port using:
net use lpt1: \\server\printer
I assume it's a rights issue to keep normal users from playing with hardware, unfortunately, it's keeping my logon script from redirecting their printer port. Any ideas?

This seems to be a bug in XP SP1.
It does not allow to map a port name that is localy in use.

There are two possible solutions:
1. disable lpt1 in the BIOS
2. use lpt2, which is not normally in use.
