Subject: Normal User cannot see Network
OS: Win2000
CPU/Ram: Cel/256MB
Comment:
Im helping a friend out, the setup is like the following:

*One computer running Win2000.
*Logged in as normal/limited user.
Looks like very limited account, example you can only select one application from Start menu, cannot even right click on Desktop, etc.

Q)I want to update Antivirus, but cannot browse to folder (folder is on other pc on network, cannot even see My Network places, only My Computer) BUT when I am logged in as Administrator, I can see that folder. I tried mapping network drive on Administrator account, but does not pick up on User/Limited account.

Where do I go (I will prob use Administrator) to enable the USER to see only that one folder/My Network Places?

Seems like simple question, but cannot seem to find the answer. I checked here
http://www.wilsonmar.com/1w2kadm.htm
but so many things they show dont know where to look!

Thank you!!

If this computer is part af a network perhaps the proper person to make any changes would be the network administrator.

Yes but that's what my friend wants ME to do! I can log in as administrator, but not sure where to go?

Its somewhere in Policies, or MMC console, or something regarding that. Not sure where to change "permissions" and "access" for limited user from Administrator account. Am I right when mentioning this terms,is it in the right direction?

Thanks for your help.

I am trying to determine if I am helping someone perform a function contrary to some company policy. That would be considered a hack I guess.

Ok. My friend has small company in small town. It is a digital printing company.

5 Pcs on network Windows 2000.
2 Machines on Windows XP.

I installed Antivirus on ALL machines, cause he's been having so much problems with worms viruses etc. In the past he didnt use Anti-Virus, great!

So now, instead of me putting a CD into each CDROM of every single PC, I put UPDATES in SHARED folder on XP machine. The 2 WinXP machines picks it up(obviuosly cause all ADMIN), but not Win2k (except when logged in as Administrator). So everytime I log in as ADMIN and then do updates thru network.

What I want to do is do updates via normal/limited user. I dont want to log into Administrator all the time, cause normally I do a scan after updated, and when I leave ADMIN logged on, some ppl could make some changes or mess it up.

Can u pls help? thanx.

I asked because some AV have auto update. Are you getting the updates and applying to the server because the AV is intended for a single PC? In answer to your direct question I do not have a direct answer. I would suggest you rephrase the question and post in the AV forum here. I am guessing the paid versions of AVG would have a workaround for this issue but I can't say for sure.

Maybe I am missing something will check it out again. But still the problem persists that Windows 2000 'limited user' cannot see My Network Places. If I could just enable that (would probably use Admin account to create 'limited user's permission) it would be great. Just dont know how to do that.

Like I say I can use Admin account, no problem, but would prefer to use 'Limited User' to see My network places. Thats all I want to do.

Thanks for your help, much appreciated.

There is NO internet access at all. Only simple network. I download updates from home and take it there so he can stay updated.

I need the user to see My Network Places. I know I should use Admin account and change User rights/permissions somewhere but dont know where to look or what to change.

Do you have access to control panel while in the limited acoount by going from the start button to settings> control panel. If so, go to the control panel and run the network wizard to setup network connections.

No unfortuneately not. Nothing except the software app they use to print stuff is on Start Menu.

To my knowledge I should be changing something with Admin account to User account, maybe some GPO, group policies or something, set permissions to 'see network' or something, there must be such an option somewhere!! I use to study it some years back but cannot remember!!

What happens if the user tries to map a drive to the share? What type of setup do you have; Domain/Workgroup?

Life's more painless for the brainless.
