Hey

I recently intalled a new hard drive into an old compac proliant 800. It has no current operating system, so when i boot up i get the error:

non-system disk or disk error
Replace and strike any key when ready

There is NOT a floppy disk in the drive, and i tried booting up with the windows 98 cd in the cdrom and i have tried without it.

I tried switching the boot-up sequence to start with the cd rom and install windows 98 right from the get-go but that didnt work.
Noting has worked and i am running out of ideas. I do not want or need a new computer, i just want this one to work. PLEASE HELP! Thanks!

Did you get an install disk with the new hard drive?
If not maybe you could go to the harddrive makers site and download an install file.
Post the make and model and me or some one I am sure can help you.

did you boot off a cdrom boot diskette like a ME diskette?

Doesn't sound like you have dealt with the basics.

Can you boot up on a boot diskette?
can you see the drive to fdisk and format?
can you run a cdrom boot diskette?
can you access the cdrom disk from a cdboot diskette?

When you answer yes to these questions the last one will be to install 98.

hi,
the error message "non-system disk or disk error. Replace and strike any key when ready" comes when the system has detected a boot device (may it be bootable CDROM drive or Floppy or HDD) AND the boot device's boot record is corrupted. please confirm the following things.
# you have configured the BIOS so that the system boots from the CDROM.
# windows bootable cd you are sing is working without any issues. i.e it is really bootable...;)
if you still unable to arrive at conclusion, remove the hard drive from the system and start the system using the window CDROM.

The make of the hard drive is a 30 gig Quantum Fireball lct 20. The hard drive was working fine (it was in a different computer) and i cannot boot up on anything right now. I tried booting up on a boot disk that would format and clear the whole hard drive but that didnt work either. It told me to remove the floppy diska dn the same old message appeared when i did. The should be CD ROM working, but i do not kow what to do now.
thanks for any help
