Here is a stumper I hope someone can help me out with. A relative was very kind enough to give me a Fujitsu Lifebook with Windows 2000 installed on it. The only thing is I can't get any sound from it. I checked the device manager and supposedly all the sound related devices are working properly. But no sound comes from the speakers. I tried plugging speakers or a headphone set in the headphone jack, but I didn't get any sound that way either. Any wisdom?

Thanks a lot.

I'm not at all familiar with that brand but I've fixed enough Toshiba and IBM laptops. Sound problems are usually related to the sound card if it's separate from the system board. If not, the fix usually requires replacing the system board....which on the aforementioned laptops is about a $1000.00 fix (parts and labour).

i know you would have checked this, but double click on the volume icon and ensure that wave isnt muted, this could be your main problem.

chances are either the bios has disabled it or there is a software fault, hardware faults on a laptop are very minimal as the mainboard is pre-factory built

Thank you to both of you. I'm hoping it is not the $1,000 option.

Thanks for the information. How would I be able to tell if the sound card is separate from the system board or not?

Yes, I did check that and everything is set up so that sound should come out fine.

For some reason I think this might be where the problem lies. I think it might be a bios problem. Once I get into the BIOS setup what should I be looking for? I've looked around but I haven't found anything related specifically to sound.

Again, thanks for your help. It would be great to get this computer up and healthy.

I recently had the same problem. if you are still not hearing sound try restarting your computer entering setup/bios by pressing DEL when booting or however you get into setup. I went to Advanced Chipset Features and scrolled down to OnChip Sound and disabled it. Rebooted and all is well.

Hope this works for you
