I get this error message in the event viewer.

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: NETLOGON
Event Category: None
Event ID: 5782
Date: 1/3/2003
Time: 11:42:03 AM
User: N/A
Computer: SERVER
Description:
Dynamic registration or deregistration of one or more DNS records failed with the following error:
No DNS servers configured for local system.
Data:
0000: 7c 26 00 00 |&..

Microsoft says to Configure the Netlogon service to depend on the DNS service. This will cause the Netlogon service to start after the DNS service starts. I did this but the message still appears every 2 hours.

AS a last resort I also added the DNS server IP to the primary DNS in TCP/IP settings. Since it is looking for a DNS this might work. THIS WORKED ! BUT now I can't get on the internet.

I run a local small domain, W2K server, with only 1 other machine on it. I am on Cable (roadrunner) and run the cable thru DI-604 router which automatically assigns IP's. Great little router.

How can I configure it to see the DNS server so I don't get this message, but still have the internet. Microsoft says to just ignore it, but I would rather not have it record this error every few hours.

Forgot to mention that at installation I did install DNS, DHCP, and Active Directory. All have performed very well with no problems.

Hawkman,

I posted the same problem on Jan 07 2003. According to eventid.net, event 5782:

"This will happen if your machine is configured to use a dns server that does not support or will not accept dynamic updates. This would be the case if your machine is pointing to the DNS server your ISP provided. To stop your computer from trying to register with dns simply go into the dns tab of the advanced tcp/ip properties of your connection and uncheck both boxes at the bottom of the window. However, if you are part of an an Active Directory infrastructure and need to use dynamic updates then you must remove your ISP dns server from your settings and only use your w2k dns servers."

I do have DNS server addresses provided by my ISP, but the checkboxes are also unchecked at the bottom of the DNS tab under TCP/IP. My ISP's DNS server provides dynamic updates, but it is not a win2k dns server.

Let me know if this helps at all...
