I have an acer 512 DX laptop that has always been reliable. I haven't used in it a while. Today I tried to run it and the cd drive will not work. The light turns on and the disk spins but no matter what disk I put in the drive it doesn't load. Using a start up floppy it shows that there is no cd drive installed. The last time I used it it worked perfectly. The floppy drive is okay and the computer starts up -- but no cd drive. This is not my main computer so I formatted the c drive, planning to reinstall windows and used a special floppy to activate the cd drive, but it didn't work. Still no cd drive. Any ideas? Usually the CD Drive is easily removable, take it out and slide it back in again to ensure it is seated properly..

Orbital,You may be right! The drive will not come out(I know, some laptops have an easy access way to remove the CD drive--this one doesn't) unless I open up the case. Anyway, I pushed in the end of the drive thinking maybe it was not completely in. I had formatted the drive yesterday. I put in my XP home cd and started it up and it read the disk! Now I have XP installed on it. I am not sure what the problem was but it is working fine now. Thanks for the suggestion. Ron reb286
