New hard disc

My laptop (1.7 Ghz centrino, 512 MB RAM, 40 GB HD) seems to have a bad HD. I am looking for a new one, but I was wondering one thing. May the defective HD be caused by other hardware present in the laptop? Like for example RAM sticks of two different brands? Just wanted to know so this won't happen again.

Drives go down without any help from other installed items.
Mismatched RAM can produce errors/problems that "may seem" like drive issues, but would not actually affect a drive itself. Matched RAM (specs) but from different manufacturers doesn't "usually" produce problems; however I tend to favour having installed RAM from one source/manufacturer, rather than two or more.
Are you "sure" the drive is failing? What are the symptoms you're getting (error messages etc.)?

It seems totally "screwed". Had an inaccessable boot device error after a clean install. Now it won't format. First it would proceed, and at 50 percent (which took like five hours) it would be stuck and wouldn't proceed. Now it won't even jump of 0%. Checkdisk doesn't work, it says it contains errors or something. Even a program (using ISO boot cd) doing a zero write format couldn't do it, so for me it is to conclude that it is defective.
