Hi
I am in a real soup. I purchased a clone computer just 2 weeks ago and installed win2k pro SP2 version on it. The computer would switch off on its own and restart immediately at least a couple of times during the day...even when working only on Outlook or Word alone or Explorer. I took it back to the shop and they said it is software problem as it used to take lot of time to "saving users settings" when shutting down using start menu.
I reloaded the Win2k Pro (non SP2 version) this time, but the problem still persists. One cannot predict when the auto shutdown will happen (it may even happen before I am able to complete this message). and it will again restart with me losing everything ...and wasting time with erroneous disk rescan.....
Please help me out........
PS>> I used my own 60GB hard drive on this new computer

Hi My name is Jeff and i work For (KCOM) Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine
as a computer tech.I have the same problem on four computers. the Problem that i have is the four computer are all different. They all have different mother boards, CPUs, and every thing eals.
When the problem started the computer would restart when ever and now the computer will reboot on startup right after the white win2k screen. My first thought was heat with the CPU or Video but i checked it and it seemed to but ok so my secound thought i Ram so I've been playing with the ram setting and got it to boot up and login to Novell but if i leave it setting it will reboot. I've ran ram tests on the ram and it check out being fine. It also seem to run better and longer after each ram test. you can try it and see the ram tester is simmtester.com docdem. Good luck

How do I get to the error log. I checked DrWtsn32.log but that sounds too complicated for me to understand. I have Norton 2003 on the machine...but the problem was occuring even before I installed Norton on it.
Incidentally, my PII 266-MMX is running the same copy of Win2000 pro and same softwares on this machine without any problem whatsoever.

Hello Jollyman
Could you please advise how to access the error log for the above problem to determine why this is happening
Thanks

Lads.........sounds like hardware to me, most likely a dodgy motherboard, sorry to have to break this to you, but go back down that shop and kick ass!

Thanks for the advice.
How do I convince the guy that it is the motherboard and nothing else. What arguments do you suggest I have? He was suggesting that it could be a power supply problem and that he would replace it. First he said that it could be happening as I am overloading the memory by using several programs, which i countered that firstly, I wans't using too many programs as it would die down even when I was using explorer or outlook alone.
I am also encountering problems with msimn.exe and explorer.exe as these too shut off anytime during browsing or e-mails and I have to start these two programs again. I am using the same programs as in my old computer (p2-266mmx) and it never encountered either of the problems.
He is suggesting that it could even be my hard drive. Is there any possibility of that if it was working absolutely fine on the previous system. (I am using the old system's HD in my new clone)
