Hey All,

I'm currently trying to network my two Win2k boxes, named galaxy and nebula. Galaxy has got a NetGear ethernet card in it, and nebula has a NEC2000 compat. card in it - their both linked via RJ45 cable to a 4-port hub, the hub shows that both cards are "functioning" as such, so I'm assuming that something is getting through - and both computers show themselves on the network, I just can't ping galaxy from nebula, or vice versa, I just get "Request timed out", galaxy is using the IP 192.168.0.2 and nebula 192.168.0.1

My hub is on normal (not uplink), and there are no device conflicts on either cards.

Both machines are on a workgroup - SILVERDREAM, and it's specified in the Network Identification properties.

It could be the cable, although I don't see any reason for this, because if the cable was faulty then the hub wouldn't show both cards as being "on" ...?

I've tried pinging galaxy from nebula and vice versa, and get "Request timed out" on both, I tried the name as well... no luck...

The hub doesn't have an external IP AFAIK... I'm not sure on that though...

I've done ipconfig on both machines and got the following:

Windows 2000 IP Config

Host Name : GALAXY
Primary DNS Suffix:
Node Type: Hybrid
IP Routing Enabled: No
WINS Proxy Enabled: No

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix:
Description: NETGEAR FA310TX Fast Ethernet Adapter (NGRPCI)
Physical Address: 00-A0-CC-DB-1D-20
DHCP Enabled: No
IP Address: 192.168.0.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS Servers: 192.168.0.1
192.168.0.2
Primary WINS Server: 192.168.0.1

----

Windows 2000 IP Configuration

Host Name: NEBULA
Primary DNS Suffix:
Node Type: Broadcast
IP Routing Enabled: No
WINS Proxy Enabled: No

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix:
Description: Accton EN1660 PnP LAN Card (Legacy Mode)
Physical Address: 00-00-E8-EA-9A-99
DHCP Enabled: No
IP Address: 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS Servers: 192.168.0.1
192.168.0.2
NetBIOS over Tcpip: Disabled

----

I have got the entire netstat output for both cards, which I can post if it'd be any help...?

Thanks,

Jamie

first ping each computers local address from themselves....

at Nebula:
ping 127.0.0.1
ping 192.168.0.1

this will verify if tcp/ip is working

then ping from one computer to the next 0.1 -> 0.2

if it does not go through, the first thing to check is the physical connection,...even though the hub shows a light(btw hubs dont have ip addresses), it may not communicate correctly

verify the wiring of each cat5 cable

i.e.->568b standard is:
|white/orange| orange | wht/green | blue | white/blue | green | wht/brown | brown |

all 4 cable ends should look like that

optionally you could look at the route table for each machine "c:\route print"
verify that the entry for 192.168.0.0 is using the correct interface

Remove the entries you have for DNS...you don't have a DNS server. Remove the entry for WINS...you don't have a WINS server. You shouldn't need a gateway as the two PCs are on the same subnet and it's the only subnet.
Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP.

As O5h said ping 127.0.0.1 to verify TCP/IP is working on each machine. Verify cable is good. Verify both NICs are operating at the same speed. A 10 mbps card and 100 mbps card won't talk to each other.
