I have a Win2k Pro machine here I would like to log into our NT4 server, and join a workgroup. Is this possible? Thanks!

Install Red Hat Linux 6.2 availaible free in this months Australian Personal Computer Magazine. It's a great operating system, never crashes and you can kiss all your problems goodbye. Also included is Suns Star Office. Sorry but Windows 2k suffers from too many problems.

Ian,

Is your server a domain controller or a file server? If it is a domain controller, you will have to have administrator rights on the server and you will have the computer join the domain. If it is a file server, put your W2KP in the same workgroup. Either way, you will also need a user account on the server to share any files and other resources.

What I would like to do is have it join the domain and THEN join a workgroup WITHIN the domain, as this is how the company is structured.

You don't JOIN workgroups. With NT4 either you area member in a DOMAIN or you are in a WORKGROUP. Now, you can join a Domain and then USE resources from different Domain or a Workgroup. If you Browse Network Neighborhood you automaticly SEE all member of either the Domain you are a member of OR the workgroup collective that you are IN. Thats by default, you can Browse to resources outside of your Domain or workgroup as long as you hace Permissions/rights, etc. Example: School A is a private School, ONLY permitted students can get in (it's a Domain). School B is a public school, everyone can get in no matter what, it's a WORKGROUP. Students in both schools are COULD attend the other, But if a stuent from the Public school wants to attent teh Private school they need to Get permision. A student from the Private school can just simply attent the public school with no permision. I think you get the Idea. if NOT I'm sorry I confused you more.
