Subject: Networking problems under Windows 2000 |
Comment: I have two systems networked peer-to-peer and I recently upgraded from Windows NT 4.0 to Windows 2000. Initially I encountered a number of problems such as Windows not recognizing some of my older components. With time and a lot of patience I took care of most problems except two, but these two are driving me crazy. I've tried everything I know so far unsuccessfully. Here is a brief description of my two headaches hoping that someone out there will shed some light on me: 1) Prior to upgrading to Windows 2000, I was able to access everything in either computer from the other. Now, I can only see two folders in each: Printers and Scheduled Tasks. Where did my drives go? What do I need to do to, once again, be able to access the hard drives? 2) Much less important for now but nevertheless intriguing is the fact that, in one of the systems, I have a conflict of resources between COM 2, which is the port being used by the modem, and the other COM ports. Every time I boot up this system the conflict pops up. Presently, the only way I can use the modem is by uninstalling COM 2 and reboot the system. Once it's up and running I can reinstall COM 2 and it works perfectly. Any suggestions with this one? I will be forever grateful to whoever helps me with these. Emilio.

Reply: What you need to do for the COM2 issue, is NOT change the BIOS settings and just go into the OS anyway and then look in device manager to isolate the offending component and determine a resource solution. Device manager will tell you if it's the address or IRQ, both of which can be changed perminately to resolve that issue. I don't have enough detail to determine the other share folders issue.

Reply: First of all, you should run the windows2000 Hardware Compatibility test from your desktop that need to upgrade to w2k in order to avoid so many problems. And with regards to this problem, I think right now, it is very obvious that you do not have any shared resources. Please try the following: 1. Verify if the "File and printer sharing for microsoft" is installed on Local Area Connection properties.(From your desktop, rightclick on my network places then properties. Right click on Local Area Connection then properties) 2. If not, install the service.(Click install, then choose services then file and printer sharing for microsoft). 3. Right click on the drive/s or folder/s that you want the other to see and click "sharing". 4. Click on "share this folder" and then apply. 5. That's all!!!!
