Okay, I'm connected to a domain on Windows 2000 (the server is 2000 as well), and I can see the network, other computers, etc. But I cannot, for the life of me, connect to the internet. Here's the scoop.

The network card is working. I can see the network.

It is not the cable or the router or the server--other computers are just working fine and I've tried switching everything just in case.

It is not IE. I have tried wiping the laptop completely--with a format. I reinstalled everything and, once faced with it not working again, removed/repaired/reinstalled Internet Explorer.

I have tried running the internet connection wizard (Tools, Internet Options, Connections, Setup), letting it auto-detect or not--it doesn't matter.

The screen I get is "The page cannot be displayed." I've tried clicking on the "Detect Network Settings" on that page--nothing.

I appreciate any suggestions!

Delete all the network adapters and reboot. They will reinstall themselves and that should do it.

Are you obtaining an IP through DHCP? Is it possible your DA has disabled internet access on this particular machine?

The IP is assigned, not DHCP. I know the IP hasn't been disabled (I'm working for with the IT dept.). It is not a proxy server. I tried uninstalling/removing the network adapters to no avail. This one is stumping every IT person I've called. Anyone have a suggestion?

Solution! Just in case anyone else had this problem, as it was driving me mad...

I could not ping anything other than the gateway. It turned out that the Firewall (Sonicwall) had exceeded its # of licenses. Even though we didn't physically exceed the # of allowable computers (50), we had been generating random IP addresses (to prevent conflicts with other users) when we wiped new machines. Thanks to everyone who replied.
