I have asked people to help me MANY times and nothing has worked. This is all I have done.
I have a crossover cable going through the computers, both the computers' Network cards have the 'connected' light on. In the LAN settings i have:

Client for Microsoft Networks
File Printer and Sharing for Microsoft Networks
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

On Comp. 1 the IP is 192.168.11.1
On Comp. 2 the IP is 192.168.11.2
Both of the computers have the subnet mask of 255.255.255.0

I have looked under the device manager and the network cards are working properly.

Both computers are in a Workgroup called .. Workgroup (lol).

on computer #1 (192.168.11.1) it can see a ghost of computer #2 and itself. On Computer #2 it can only see itself.
If I cant see the other computer, I cannot SHARE FILES!!!!
which i want to do.
I can't ping the other either.

I tried adding NETBeui, didn't change its still the same.
I tried pinging again from 11.1 to 11.2
and it came back with

Request Timed Out
Request Timed Out
Request Timed Out

On 11.2 I tried pinging 11.1 from 11.2 same response.

On 11.1 I can see a 'ghost' of the other computer, but when I access it, it says

\\Ling (which is 11.2) is not accessible.
The Network path was not found.

Please help

Hi,
Are you running any kind of firewall software like Norton Internet Security? If so, you may have to go in and manually add the IP address you want to allow to access your computer running the software. I had that problem.

No,
I don't think antivirus would have any affect. The only other thing that pops into my head is that you have not shared any folders or files. You have to right click the folder/file, click sharing and select share this folder/file as. Are you running 2000 on both pc's? Also, I believe you have to add the user to your 2000 machine...start->settings->control panel->users & passwords->add user, to allow a remote user to log onto the network...but this wouldn't account for not being able to ping. One other thing to try. Start->search->files or folders, scroll down and select computers, then type: \\Ling and hit enter. If that doesn't show your computer, then it's definately not communnicating.

This site had alot of good help for me setting mine up:
http://www.wown.info/

Also, maybe the guys in the networking section here woiuld be more useful...I'm more of a programmer guy...good luck.

I have added accounts on both the machines that we WOULD use if it is working. I have shared folders on both of the computers;. I recently tried a new crossover cable, but that was faulty, it said (on 11.2) that it was connected, however on 11.1 (mine) it said network cable is unplugged and its got that X through the icon in the tray. I still can't ping, which on that website said that there is something wrong with my hardware. Which there isn't because i've checked the Device Manager and there are no problems or anything. Please help me.

Oh, and there was nothing on that site that could help me.

give this a try
__________
uninstall the protocol set both tcp/ip as well as netbeui then uninstall the network card (not physically) give a restart then reinstall the network card install the tcp/ip as well as netbeui give a ip address
try to ping if it doesn't ping 127.0.0.1 to check whether your network card is working or not.
get your network cable checked by a cable tester.
if it still doesn't post it here mean time i'll give it a thought what else could be bothering you

i am suggesting this because i feel that might be there some protocol files missing.

Okay, I uninstalled TCP/IP and NETBeui and the network card. That did nothing. I pinged my network card (127.0.0.1) and it came back with

Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time<10ms TTL=128
Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time<10ms TTL=128
Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time<10ms TTL=128

Which means it worked.

I still can't ping the other computer from mine and vice versa.

I've already tried another crossover cable and that didn't work either.

(and obviously reinstalled TCP/IP, NETbeui and the card before starting to ping)

Just get a cheap hub instead of using a crossover cable and run the wizard for setting up home or small business network.

You'll need to create a new share for the drive or folder/file etc. The problem from your description is you only have the default shares setup. Let me know if you need more specific info.
